The Datejust has spent eighty years being the watch people reach for when they want one Rolex to do everything. The 28mm case takes that brief and makes it personal.

This reference pairs an Oystersteel case with an 18k white gold fluted bezel — a combination Rolex has used since the Datejust’s earliest days, and one that still reads as understated rather than showy. The dial is where the watch earns its name. Rather than a flat charcoal, the dark grey surface has enough depth to shift under changing light, and the diamond hour markers catch that light without turning the dial busy. It’s a dressier proposition than a plain index dial, but nowhere near as ornate as a full pavé face.

Look closer and the details reward it: polished white gold hands, a date window at 3 o’clock under the familiar Cyclops lens, and a Jubilee bracelet with its five-piece link pattern, which sits noticeably more fluidly on the wrist than the flatter Oyster bracelet.

Inside is the calibre 2236, Rolex’s movement built specifically for its smaller watches, running on a Syloxi silicon hairspring that resists magnetism and holds its rate through temperature swings better than a conventional spring. Power reserve is 55 hours, so it survives a weekend off the wrist without needing a reset. Water resistance is 100 metres, and the case is finished with Rolex’s usual mix of polished and brushed surfaces across the lugs and links.

At 28mm it sits at the upper end of what Rolex still calls “Lady,” but it wears less like a small watch and more like a Datejust that happens to fit a smaller wrist — the proportions of the dial, hands and date window are all scaled together, so nothing looks oversized or cramped.
