The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 116500LN is the reference that redefined the modern steel Daytona. Introduced in 2016, it was the first stainless steel Daytona ever fitted with a monobloc Cerachrom ceramic bezel — a feature previously reserved for Rolex’s precious metal models — and it quickly became one of the most in-demand sports watches Rolex has ever produced. This white dial configuration, with its three contrasting black chronograph registers, earned the collector nickname “Panda” for its resemblance to the animal’s markings, linking it directly back to Rolex’s celebrated vintage exotic-dial Daytonas of the 1960s.
The 40mm Oystersteel case pairs a black Cerachrom bezel with a tachymeter scale engraved directly into the ceramic and filled with platinum PVD, giving the scratch-resistant bezel lasting definition and virtually eliminating the fading older acrylic and steel bezels were prone to. The crisp white dial carries applied cushion-shaped white gold hour markers and Chromalight-filled hands for legibility, with the signature red “Daytona” script curving above the 6 o’clock counter. Three black sub-dial rings house the 30-minute counter, running seconds, and 12-hour counter, creating the high-contrast look that defines the Panda’s appeal.
Inside is the Rolex Calibre 4130, the manufacture’s first ground-up in-house automatic chronograph movement, offering an approximate 72-hour power reserve and Rolex’s Superlative Chronometer certification, guaranteeing accuracy to -2/+2 seconds per day. Screw-down chronograph pushers and a Triplock crown help the case achieve 100 metres of water resistance, while a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal protects the dial.
The watch is completed with Rolex’s three-link Oyster bracelet, secured with an Oysterlock safety clasp and the Easylink extension system for quick 5mm on-the-wrist adjustments.
Now discontinued and succeeded by the 126500LN in 2023, the 116500LN Panda remains the reference that established the modern steel Daytona’s reputation — and continues to be one of the most sought-after Rolex sports watches on the pre-owned market.
